The text specifically focuses on the narrator’s moment of realisation that a specific incident in his childhood moulded him into the adult he has become later on in life. The text shifts between past and present to emphasise the fact that “traumatic events can highlight and bring into sharp relief, in a second, the issue of a ‘split self’” (Bray & Bray, 2013, p.8). This analogy of the ‘split self’ that is traumatised by events is certainly evident with the narrator
