I will focus on the following themes within The Bookseller of Kabul: the male role within society, power/lack of power and control, religion and control of the Taliban reign, influence of the West over the East, and the role of freedom versus lack of freedom in regards to the spoken word. The novel centres around the main character Sultan Khan and his family who live in war torn Afghanistan. Seierstad was very fortunate enough to be allowed intimate access into the family domain as an insider who was to be trusted to write the truth. Seierstad was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to meet a much−loved member of the Afghanastani community with whom she built bridges in order to become part of the family. Seierstad provides the elder
