Chomsky’s quote certainly raises the important notion about how power can be misused and manipulated by those who are certainly meant to know better. The Taliban have evidently ‘governed’ the masses of Afghanistan by forcing them to abide a very strict regime or face the dire consequences and as Fawad’s mother denotes this included massacring the innocent civilians of Afghanistan for its own political gains. The reality of the Taliban is also disclosed by Fawad’s revelation that they in fact manipulated and ceased control over the illiterate within society. An elder that Fawad respects discloses that:

It must have been easy to convince ordinary Muslims living in the countryside, who couldn’t read and write, that the orders they gave came straight from the pages of the Quran. (Busfield, 2009, p.72)
